Kansas City might be best known for its barbecue, but if you know where to look, the Italian food scene here holds its own. Whether you’re planning a date night, celebrating something big or just craving a perfect bowl of pasta on a weeknight, KC has no shortage of spots that deliver.
Here’s a look at some of the best Italian restaurants in Kansas City—each with its own take on what makes Italian food so comforting, memorable and worth coming back for.
Kansas City’s Italian restaurant scene is deeply rooted in the historic Columbus Park neighborhood, once known as “Little Italy,” where Italian immigrants settled in the late 1800s and brought rich culinary traditions from regions such as Sicily and Northern Italy.
Over time, this neighborhood became the foundation for many beloved, family-owned establishments that shaped the city’s dining culture. Iconic restaurants such as Italian Gardens, Jennies and Jaspers have all helped establish a lasting legacy.
Although some have closed over time, these restaurants, together, reflect generations of family influence, authentic recipes and a strong sense of community.
That Italian influence still shapes Kansas City’s food scene today—especially when it comes to pizza. From old-school neighborhood spots to newer wood-fired concepts, it’s a category locals take seriously. Garozzo’s Ristorante opened its first location in 1989, “on a wing and a prayer” in Kansas City’s historic Columbus Park neighborhood. Founded by Michael Garozzo, the restaurant quickly became one of the city’s most recognizable Italian dining destinations, known for combining old-school hospitality with classic Italian-American comfort food.
Today, Garozzo’s has expanded to multiple locations throughout the Kansas City area and remains a favorite for everything from family dinners to celebrations and business lunches.
Over the years, the restaurant has earned numerous local honors and built a loyal following among Kansas Citians looking for authentic Italian flavors in a welcoming atmosphere.
Garozzo’s embraces its family roots through generations of involvement and personal touches throughout the restaurant. Family photos line the walls, creating a warm, neighborhood-style dining experience that reflects the restaurant’s deep Kansas City history.
The atmosphere feels distinctly Kansas City Italian — lively, welcoming and centered around large portions, shared meals and longtime traditions.
Garozzo’s is best known for its famous Chicken Spiedini, a signature dish created by the restaurant that has become a Kansas City staple. The restaurant also draws praise for classic Italian favorites such as baked mostaccioli, cannelloni, chicken parmesan and rich house-made sauces.
The portions are generous, making it a popular spot for family-style dining and leftovers the next day.
Under the guidance of his Italian-native mother and heavily influenced by his travels throughout Italy, Jake Imperiale opened Bella Napoli in 2001 to meet Kansas City's need for authentic Italian food, wine and market goods.
From the beginning, Jake's parents instilled traditional Italian ideals in their son, including the value of an honest day’s work, the power of a few simple ingredients to create a perfect meal, the genuine love of people and the idea that even when there wasn't "enough"... there was always "enough" to share.
Bella Napoli’s handmade gnocchi remains one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, known for its light texture and rich flavor. Their wood-fired pizzas are another standout, featuring simple, high-quality ingredients such as fresh mozzarella, basil and house-made tomato sauce.
Many locals also recommend the lasagna, seafood dishes and extensive wine selection for date nights or special occasions.

Plate Italiano Moderno opened in 2014 and quickly became known for bringing a more modern approach to Italian dining to the Kansas City area. Located in Leawood’s Park Place development, the restaurant combines traditional Italian inspiration with contemporary flavors, presentation and atmosphere.
Owner and operator Cristian Joseph developed his passion for Italian cuisine while studying under mentors in Monte San Savino, Tuscany. That influence helped shape Plate’s focus on fresh ingredients, handcrafted dishes and elevated Italian dining that still feels approachable and welcoming.
While Plate offers a more modern atmosphere than many traditional Kansas City Italian restaurants, the restaurant still embraces many of the same values that define Italian dining — gathering around great food, quality ingredients and memorable experiences shared with family and friends.
The restaurant’s stylish yet comfortable atmosphere has made it a popular destination for date nights, celebrations, business dinners and upscale casual dining in Johnson County.
Plate is especially known for its house-made pasta, fresh seafood dishes and wood-fired pizzas. Seasonal menu features and chef-inspired specials keep the menu feeling fresh while still honoring classic Italian cooking techniques.
Guests also frequently recommend the handcrafted cocktails, appetizers and desserts, making Plate a favorite for both full dinners and social evenings at Park Place.
