Since 1988, Axcet HR Solutions has proudly called Kansas City home. As more than just a trusted PEO, we are passionate about fostering the success of local businesses, particularly those that contribute to Kansas City’s vibrant culinary landscape. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on the best local bakeries, as chosen by our Axcet HR team.

What Makes a Kansas City Bakery "Local"?

Kansas City boasts a wide variety of bakeries, each embodying the essence of what it means to be "local." These privately owned, community-centered and often family-run bakeries are more than places to grab a quick treat—they are neighborhood institutions. Unlike large commercial chains, these bakeries are the heart of their communities, offering fresh, from-scratch goods daily.

Kansas City’s Bakery Contenders

Based on our team’s recent survey, we considered a number of local favorites. While some specialize in cookies or bread, we focused on bakeries that offer a broader variety of baked goods.

Here’s the full list of bakeries we reviewed:

  • Best Regards Bakery and Cafe – Known for their artisan breads, cookies and pastries.
  • Bloom Baking Co. – A French-inspired bakery with a variety of breads and sweets.

Winner of the Kansas City Bakery Contest: McLain’s Market

The McLain family started their business in Waldo in 1945 where they built a legacy for over 60 years. After changing ownership over the years, McLain’s now belongs to the Hirleman family, who re-envisioned the bakery, cakery, coffeeshop, and eatery into a place fueled by community involvement, serving lunch, breakfast and sweet treats in various Kansas City neighborhoods.

Their slogan “making life’s moment sweeter” rings true as McLain’s Cakery has been making cakes, cupcakes, cookies and wedding cakes for over 75 years.

Known for its inviting atmosphere and friendly staff, McLain’s Market offers a wide variety of baked goods, from pastries and cookies to custom cakes and savory breakfast items.

Their infamous “cupcookies” are a local treasure: shortbread-style cookies with a pecan sandy base, topped with fudge or white buttercream, and often sprinkled with nuts.

In addition to their classic offerings, McLain’s is a go-to gluten-free bakery in Kansas City, also offering vegan options to ensure that everyone can enjoy their delicious treats. Whether you’re planning an event or need a selection of treats for your office, McLain’s has a range of offerings that accommodate diverse dietary needs.

Runner Up: Best Regards Bakery & Café

Best Regards Bakery & Café takes second place in our office competition, renowned for its gourmet cookies, artisan breads, and delicious pastries. Crafting everything from scratch using premium ingredients and boasting an incredible backstory, there is no doubt why this shop is a fan favorite amongst locals.

Cherrie and Robert Duensing founded Best Regards gift baskets in 1993 and soon expanded to a warehouse a few months later. Robert discovered his talent for creating recipes, particularly focusing on crafting a memorable cookie.

By 2007, the trajectory of their business changed dramatically when Tony Tobin, a Kansas City radio icon, discovered Best Regards. In 2011, Best Regards relocated to Overland Park, acquiring a top-notch baking oven that allowed Robert to perfect artisan breads, significantly broadening their menu offerings.

In the fall of 2012, Best Regards Bakery and Café was launched, transforming into a bustling hub where patrons could enjoy a wide array of offerings including hearty lunches, freshly baked artisan breads, and irresistible cookies. Stop into Best Regards today and try one of their famous cranberry orange cookies or delicious cinnamon rolls!
