1. Mayor’s Christmas Tree at Crown Center, Kansas City

Did you know Kansas City is home to one of USA Today’s Top 10 Public Christmas Trees? It’s true! Standing at 100 feet, the Oregon Douglas fir at Crown Center is one of the nation’s largest Christmas trees, adorned with 7,200 twinkling lights.

Experience the magic of the season in Kansas City with ice skating, a gingerbread village, and a holiday train, all adding to the festive atmosphere. For more details, visit the Crown Center website.

Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Head over to Crown Center Square at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, November 29, for the lighting of one of the largest Christmas trees in the country.

This year’s lighting ceremony blends new and cherished traditions as part of the Hallmark Christmas Experience.

Crown Center President Stacey Paine, Mayor Quinton Lucas, and Hallmark Stars will lead the countdown, followed by a dazzling new light show and fireworks display.

New for 2024: Nightly Tree Lightings

Throughout the season, nightly tree lightings will continue to enchant visitors as part of the Hallmark Christmas Experience. Special guests and light shows make Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings even more magical.

  • Friday and Saturday: 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m.
  • Sunday: 5:30 p.m.

The Mayor’s Christmas Tree will stay lit through January 5, 2025.

2. Union Station, Kansas City

The holidays truly come alive at Union Station with Holiday Reflections, Kansas City’s largest indoor holiday display! This expanded, immersive experience features all the beloved decorations and activities from past years, along with dazzling new additions for 2024—no coats required.

    Take a stroll through a recreated 1920s shopping street, complete with charming storefronts that celebrate Kansas City’s holiday history.
  • Crown Chandeliers

    Admire replicas of the historic “CROWNS” that once adorned downtown intersections, each chandelier sparkling with over 20,000 crystals.
  • 30-Foot Crystal Christmas Tree and Ride-On Train

    Gather around a magnificent 30-foot tree adorned with 1,500 crystal ornaments. The original Jones Store mini train circles the base—train rides are $5 (free for members, accessible with a paid ticket to Holiday Reflections).
  • 4D Sleigh Ride VR Adventure

To enhance the experience for daytime visitors, Union Station has added “12 Days of Christmas” themed blackout curtains on its iconic Grand Plaza windows, making the display equally enchanting by day.

Dates and Admission

Holiday Reflections runs from November 22 through January 1, open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person, with Union Station members paying as low as $8. Additional tickets are required for select attractions, including the ride-on train and VR experience. The last ticketed entrance is at 7:00 p.m.

All proceeds support Union Station’s preservation, helping to keep this Kansas City landmark thriving for future generations.

3. Luminary Walk at Overland Park Arboretum

Kick off your holiday season with a festive, family walk through the beautifully illuminated Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens! The 25th Annual Luminary Walk offers three unique experiences, each bringing a different magic to the holiday season:

Traditional Luminary Walk

Enjoy a classic holiday stroll along illuminated pathways featuring the magical Gnome and Fairy Villages, candlelit Marder Garden and the vibrant Children’s Garden.

Musical performances fill the air, and pathways glow with thousands of lights.

Santa is available for photos from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m., while the Train Garden operates until 8:45 p.m. Complimentary hot cider is available in the Children’s Discovery Garden.

Electric Glow

This low-sensory, crowd-free version of the Luminary Walk provides a peaceful experience without the crowds, Santa, or live performances.

4. Plaza Lights at Country Club Plaza, Kansas City

Perhaps the most iconic Christmas lights in Kansas City are those illuminating the Country Club Plaza buildings. A tradition for 95 years, the Plaza Lighting Ceremony is often seen as the official start of the holiday season for Kansas Citians. This 15-block spectacle features thousands of vibrant, jewel-colored lights accentuating the domes, towers, and windows of the Plaza’s Spanish-inspired architecture.

95th Annual Evergy Plaza Lighting Ceremony

The Plaza Lighting Ceremony will take place on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 28, 2024, from 5 to 8 p.m., with the switch flipped at approximately 7 p.m. by Kansas City Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt and his wife, Tavia Hunt.

The ceremony will include performances by DJ Kirby, Quixotic and dancers from Monica’s School of Dance, followed by a fireworks display. The stage for the event will be at the intersection of Nichols Road and Pennsylvania Avenue.

The event is free and open to the public.

Viewing and Best Spots

The Plaza Lights can be enjoyed daily from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m., from November 28 through January 12, 2025. For optimal views of the lights and the ceremony, head to the rooftop of the Plaza 211 parking garage. Other great spots include the rooftops of McCormick & Schmick’s, the InterContinental Kansas City Hotel, and the second floor of Barnes & Noble.

While admiring the lights, visitors can stroll through the Plaza’s beautifully decorated window displays and enjoy the sounds of the season. All Plaza parking garages will be open and accessible throughout the Plaza Lights season.

5. Jingle! at Legends Field - NEW for 2024

After last year’s success with Enchant Christmas, Legends Field welcomes a brand-new holiday experience for 2024: JINGLE! From the creators of Enchant, JINGLE! brings even more holiday magic to the Kansas City area, making it a must-visit destination for holiday lights and festive fun.

What to Expect at JINGLE!

  • Over 4 Million Lights

    Wander through dazzling light displays and a walk-through holiday light maze that will enchant visitors of all ages.

6. Christmas in the Park, Lee’s Summit

Your holidays aren’t complete unless you’ve taken a drive through the 37th Annual Jackson County Christmas in the Park! This breathtaking display features more than one million dazzling lights and 200 animated displays. For pictures and additional information, visit the Jackson County website.

Everything kicks off this year on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, from 5:30 - 10:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Christmas in the Park is open through December 31 from 5:30 - 10:00 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 5:30 - 11:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Voluntary exit donations can be made that will benefit 35 local charities.

7. Magic Tree, Lee’s Summit

Once you’ve experienced the Christmas in the Park festivities, be sure to visit the Lee’s Summit Magic Tree. This stunning tree is a beacon of holiday cheer, illuminated by more than 12,000 rainbow-colored LED lights, creating a simple yet elegant display that’s perfect for family photos. Visitors are welcome to take pictures and are also encouraged to donate to a charitable cause.

This year, Magic Tree will once again be collecting new, unwrapped toys for Operation Toy Soldier, benefiting children of deployed and non-deployed soldiers. Bring a toy when you visit and add a little extra magic to a child’s holiday season.

The lighting ceremony for the Magic Tree takes place on November 27, 2024, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., and the tree will be lit through January 5. For directions, photos, and more information, visit the Magic Tree website.

Magic Tree Holiday Pop-Up Bar

Returning for its second year, the Magic Tree Holiday Pop-Up Bar at Paragon Star is set to enchant visitors once again.

Step into a cozy winter wonderland with holiday decor, twinkling lights, and classic holiday tunes.

Whether you’re looking for a festive night out, a memorable photo op, or a spot for holiday gatherings, this pop-up is an ideal seasonal stop.

8. Holiday Lights on Farmstead Lane at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, Overland Park

In its 12th year, but with plenty of new features, Holiday Lights on Farmstead Lane is the perfect place to pull in with your family to enjoy a 38-minute show synchronized to music. So, grab some hot chocolate before you head out, find a parking spot, tune your radio to 90.5 FM and enjoy the show.

Experience Holiday Lights on Farmstead Lane from November 28 - December 31 from 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. Admission is free.

9. Winter Magic, Kansas City

Celebrate the season with Winter Magic, Kansas City’s ultimate holiday drive-through lights display, now in its fifth spectacular year!

This year, Winter Magic has doubled its dazzle with twice the lights and a stunning new location in the Northland.

With breathtaking, upgraded displays and festive music, this drive-through experience promises an unforgettable holiday outing for families and friends alike.

10. Christmas Place at Terrace Place Subdivision, Overland Park

Voted the number one Christmas neighborhood in Johnson County Kansas for 16+ years and always a must-have on our list of best Christmas lights in Kansas City, this neighborhood is a must-see! It features a double cul-de-sac with all 23 homes participating and is the closest you'll get to a real-life winter wonderland right here in Kansas City.

The tradition was started by Terrace Place resident Cindy Lou Corley who lost her courageous battle against breast cancer. The neighborhood has done an outstanding job keeping its tradition alive.

Open Thanksgiving evening through January 4.

11.  Candy Cane Lane, Prairie Village

This well-known display has been around since 1958 and was revived for its 50th anniversary in 2007. It is definitely worth adding to your Kansas City Christmas lights drive this holiday season. Each home on the street and cul-de-sac has at least one 4-foot tall candy cane, with some measuring 10 feet, hence its name, Candy Cane Lane.

You can expect to see lots of twinkling lights, holiday displays, and a 50-foot-tall Christmas tree with lighted presents displayed around it.

The display is open the Saturday following Thanksgiving through January 1 from 5:00 - 10:30 p.m.

12.  Bradshaw Christmas Light Show, Overland Park

Another attraction to add to your Kansas City Christmas lights adventure in Overland Park is the Bradshaw Street Christmas Light Show. While it is a more recent display, it is just as impressive as some of the more well-known ones.

The display encompasses an entire cul-de-sac of homes. Be sure to tune in to 99.9 FM once you enter the neighborhood as many of the lights are synchronized to the music and be sure to check out the talking Christmas tree!

13.  Evergy Festival of Lights at Powell Gardens

The Evergy Festival of Lights at Powell Gardens brings Kansas City a magical winter wonderland from November 14, 2024, to January 4, 2025. Open on select evenings from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., this annual event offers captivating light displays, holiday activities, and seasonal entertainment for all ages.

2024 Highlights

  • Conservatory Snow Globe

    Step into a winter wonderland in Powell Gardens’ glass-domed Conservatory, filled with twinkling lights, flocked trees, delicate white flowers, and festive red ornaments, creating a magical holiday snow globe experience.
  • Magic Tree

    Marvel at the illuminated Royal Purple Smoketree in the Visitor Center Tram Circle—an ideal spot for festive holiday photos.
  • Light Display by ScrapHeads 21485

    On the East Lawn near the Fountain Garden, the ScrapHeads 21485 robotics team presents a unique, music-synchronized light display. Sponsored by ALL PRO Electric Inc., this display highlights local student talent.
  • Light Maze

    Located near the Missouri Barn & Silo, this enchanting maze invites visitors to navigate glowing pathways, leading to a sparkling center.
  • Santa’s Workshop

    From November 29 to December 21, visit Santa and Mrs. Claus at their cozy workshop in the Children’s Garden on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 9 p.m. 

    Mrs. Claus will also host story times on Saturdays (November 30 through December 21). Kids can write letters to Santa and enjoy free holiday crafts daily.

    Enjoy festive performances in the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel with acts like the St. Paul Ringers, Alan Voss Jazz Group, and Eboni Fondren Quartet.

Closed on Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Admission varies by date, with advance-purchase parking available. Powell Gardens members receive free admission.
